    Dollars per MPH

Ok, so Motor Trend did this ultimate drag race.

Yahoo Autos is your source for automotive news, research tools and conversation.

Dividing the cost of the car by the mph in the 1/4, here is how it breaks down dollars per mph:

    Lambo: $2940 (132.3 mph)
    McLaren: $1752 (130.7 mph)
    Jaguar: $1126 (118.1 mph)
    Benz: $1063 (117.6 mph)
    Porsche: $910 (117.1 mph)
    Nissan: $807 (124.8 mph)
    Camaro: $502 (117.4 mph)
    Mustang: $473 (125.7 mph)
    Subaru: $299 (94.4 mph)

    My pick: the Mustang.

most of us don't need such a list..

mustang is a natural cheap go fast.

why is subaru even there. claiming post 1990 subaru cheap is not even funny...and they aren't even fast in a v8 stamina kinda way. they sprite the dollars per mile right out the wobbly 5 main engine...or the tranny. kamiakaze any moment.

My pick, well I would build something with a car I picked up cheap that nobody else wanted or could repair. What if I went 200mph with an investment of about $10k? Or went 9s for a grand total of about $15k? That would kinda stomp that little list into dust. I went 11.71@115 in a car I had a grand total of $4900 invested in, that is $42.60 per mph in the 1/4. The blue Formula should run about 130mph in the quarter, that comes out to $115.38 per mph, and that includes rebuilding the engine after it was sabotaged, so without that it would be $4k cheaper.

Sure as heck doesn't pay to derby...

The first time you built the car or subsequent builds? I could build the Camaro - faster - for under $5K total if I did it again. First time I shot a TON of $$ on stuff I didn't need that didn't work but I thought were "must haves". Current total = $I don't wanna know.

                    As is our derby efforts..
One year we tallied... Got over 3K with one car built...
It spreads out the more you build but we did 6 this year. 5 at our shop...

why is my first thought "because his dollar per mph in his Nova is higher then it would be in a Lambo".... I'm sure that's not the case (lol), but it was my first thought

My labor is free, because its my hobby not my profession. Its either build hot rods or play video games, and I am sick of first person shooters.

I had this discussion with Yannick. He said I had to figure in the labor on my cars in their cost. I explained that I don't. I wasn't forgoing paid work while I worked on my cars. It was a hobby that I did on my time off. In his case, he does because he stopped working on customer paying cars to work on his own. In the case of his twin engined car, he didn't have to figure in labor cost because he worked on that car at home on weekends and evenings. He wasn't putting aside customer cars to work on it.

Yep, unless you want to go REALLY fast.....even at that, speed-rated 18 inch tires are ten dollars per ounce. Trust me on that one. Been there and back.

Has anybody noticed I haven't posted on the You Might Be a Gearhead thread? I can't afford it. Done all I can ever do, speed-wise.

10 dollars per hp is about average for Ford aftermarket junk in the level I look at. Add a 1100 p.o.s. Muttstang, and I'm hoping for 110 @ 5k, or 45.45 per mph.

at 500 per mph I expect low earth orbit.
