Sort of along the lines of the Olympics, sort of, but not exactly...
When I was a young teenager, A whole bunch of us book-hounds I went to mid-school and high school with scored the latest softback copy the of Guiness Book of World records.
A reference book for sure, but...well, we worshiped it.
The latest edition. Remember, we were kids. Easily fascinated, better books than drugs back then.
With my metabolism and body weight, I was able to ride a bicycle a real long way a whole lot of times, days on end, but that saga such as it it is is well documented here, I'm no going on about that.
And a as kid, I saw that the Guiness Book of World Records (back at that time at least) for a pogo stick was about 3500 hops. It wasn't based on time, it was based on hops.
So back then I figured I could beat that record easily. Santa Claus brought me a wimpy pogo stick from the department store, so I had one. I wore the spring out in it, so it essentially didn't have one at all.
Hard bounces.
So, to experiment, I hopped in Mom and Dad's driveway 1500 bounces, counting as I went. It took soooo long, counting. I never got tired. Wasn't hurt or tired, just got bored with it, Remember I was a kid, I got bored? I got off at 1500 bounces, not even out of breath or hurt, just plain bored.
My name could have been in that record book. Pogo stick champion.
And I could walk on stilts, too, another thing I thought would be cool. My parents wouldn't buy me any so I built some wooden ones. Maybe two feet off the ground. I don't think there's a world record for stilts. Another acquired skill.
Back in the day.
