    GM Steering Box Interchange

The steering box on my '60 El Camino needs replacing - it's currently manual steering but I would consider changing to power.

I believe most Saginaw boxes (manual & power) will physically bolt straight on to the frame but what differences in input and output shafts & splines should I be aware of?

Would the power steering box off my '68 Cutlass work? I'm thinking of upgrading the Cutlass to a Grand Cherokee box so I could then put the stock one on the El Camino. What year Grand Cherokee boxes work - I remember a thread that mentioned it but can't find it.

1993-98 on the Grand Cherokee Box swap. Don't know about the retrofit from Cutlass to '60 El Camino.

Front steer, rear steer... Location of box makes a difference I think?
If located same side of wheel (front-rear) should fit ... May be some differences in tie-rod size ..

Thanks for the info on the Grand Cherokee - Rock Auto has reman ones super cheap.

The El Camino is front steer and the frame mounting point looks the same as the later boxes, just need to know whether the pitman arm and steering column splines changed at some point over the years.

Reman is probably the way to go, unless you can get a low mileage one. I'm pretty sure that the input spline changed in 1977 which is why you'll need to source a different rag joint for your Cherokee to Cutlass conversion.

I'm not sure that front or rear mount really matters. I could have swapped a Grand Cherokee or F41 G-body box into my '64 Riviera if I'd wanted with the stock pitman arm and all those cars are front steer and mine is a rear steer.

No help on the actual tracking down what would fit an '60 El Camino, sweet cars though.
