    Making a 10 Bolt Live.......

I've mentioned it before that I upgraded the rearend in my '99 Camaro with Moser axles, an Auburn posi and GM 3.73 gears......Well today I did the final upgrade to it and that was install a T/A Performance Girdle Cover........So here's some pics of how it went.......

This pic is how things where when I pulled the stock cover off.......

In this pic I've replace the stock bolts on the right side that hold the main caps on with ARP studs......You torque the studs into the housing at 10ft/lbs, and then torque the nuts to 70ft/lbs........

There all done with the main cap studs ready to instal the cover......

The cover is pretty straight forward on the install, basically install the bolts and tighten them to 25ft/lbs.... Though do make sure to back out the preload studs in the cover so they don't prevent the cover from tightening up all the way or worse cause the cover to crack because they are not allowing the cover to seat all the way.....Once the cover bolts are tightened, run the preload bolts in by hand until they tighten up against the main caps, then take your inch/pound torque wrench and tighten them to 60 in/lbs.....Once they are tightened, then you can tighten the lock nuts and your good to go........Oh and don't forget to fill it with gear oil and add any posi additives that you may need......

    There you go, all done.........

Looks good. I'll be dealing with this on my S-10 soon. I'm running a 94-up S-10 axle w/3.42 gears.
Gonna weld the axle tubes, & add a posi unit. Might even go with a solid pinion spacer.
Been looking at the Auburn posi units too. How do you like the your Auburn posi?

        Thanks guys!!......

So far the Auburn has been great, no problems at all and when I spin, both tires spin and the car launches straight.......I probably have about 30,000 miles on it........

You know my 8.2" 10 bolt survived all this time? The tires have never hooked up. Ha.

              Good job, TC.

My first posi that I bought when I switched to a 12 bolt was an Auburn. It wore out quickly. For years I disliked them, thinking they are junk.
... but I also wore out a Moroso Brute Strength. I thought it was because I was using the "not for street use" metal friction discs.
In hindsight, the rear end was mounted in the car crooked, causing constant wear. I have adjustable upper trailing arms, and didn't realize that adding preload (like race cars do with a 4 link set up) actually made the housing sit crooked in the car. I only discovered this when I switched to a spool; the car wouldn't go straight down the track.

-also, with the Moroso, I was using Royal Purple synthetic gear oil even though the directions from Moroso say to only use their climbing gear lube, which I dismissed as a sales tactic. This may have added to the short life of the friction discs.

Thousands of people successfully using the Auburn units trump my individual experience with them.

Thanks man!!....... It was recommended by Auburn not to use a synthetic gear oil with this Posi unit, just regular gear lube and a couple of bottles of the GM Posi additive........ I also read in a few forums of people using Royal Purple and having problems with the Auburn's to, but after switching to regular gear oil and the gm additive everything work great.........

I still have my stock 8.2 in my Impala, DEFINITELY the weak link. I put a mini spool and a girdle like TC has (stock 3.36 gear) and its held up so far....... I would estimate my 406 to make 575-600hp, so at 3900# and 1.60 60 foots at the track I've been lucky! The 9" is going in for sure this year finally.
