Heartland park is a drag strip and raceway. Don't know if either will be open for use. Other than that I would move on to the next city. LOL

As per Paul Cartwright of Heartland Park Topeka, Hot Rod has control of the track for the day. There will be drag racing for official participants of the Power Tour from 1 pm to 5 pm. This facility is absolutely enormous (about 680 acres) and there is plenty of room for everyone.
Topeka is one of the largest small towns you will find. The people here are friendly and easy to get along with. Lake Shawnee is a place large enough to accommodate a large group of hot rodders with lots of parking and picnic areas and a nice scenic road around the lake for cruising. You can get there by going north from Heartland Park on Topeka Boulevard to 37th Street and then going east on 37th Street until your hat floats!
Night life in Topeka on a Monday leaves a bit to be desired... :( However, there are a couple of GREAT barbeque joints to choose from. Boss Hawgs offers some fantastic BBQ as well as the best baked beans I have ever had. They are located at 2833 SE 29th (North from Heartland Park on Topeka Boulevard to 29th Street and then west about a mile on the north side of 29th) in the Brookwood Shopping Center. You can reach them at 785-273-7300 or check out their website: http://www.bosshawgsbbq.com/
Another top notch BBQ joint is Pat's Pig. Located at 5900 S. Topeka Boulevard, they are just about a minute north of Heartland Park and offer some fantastic ribs as well as incredible sandwiches. Don't be fooled if it looks like the place is full from the front. There is PLENTY of parking in the rear. Right next door is Juniors Grill and Bar with a couple great pool tables and frosty barley pop as well as a great menu! Say hello to Mel (she is a hottie!)
I am working to get a fantastic local blues band, Josh Vowell and the Rumble, to have a gig at The Down Under on south Topeka Boulevard on June 9. Josh is one of the best blues guitarists I have ever seen and lays down some of the hottest licks around on his Stratocaster. Check ‘em out at http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=308914667 Click on their song “Floor It” and enjoy!
I will be returning from the NMCA race at Atco, New Jersey on the afternoon of the 9th and will be in attendance at Heartland Park as soon as I get back. I hope to see all of you there!!!

Topeka was once famous (infamous?) for its number of gentlemen's clubs. Once rated number 2 in the U.S. per capita in strip clubs, the number has dwindled to only 5 (that I know of) still operating in the Capital City.
The Combat Air Museum is located right across the street (Gary Ormbsby Drive) from Heartland Park Topeka. I have never personally been there (I have, however been to every one of the strip clubs... ) but I hear it is a great place to check out.
Just an FYI, the Down Under Lounge is closed on Mondays, so Josh and the band are looking for a different venue to satisfy the musical needs of the Power Tour participants.

Ok, guys and gals, here's the deal.
After conversing with Cliff Cormier (an old hot rodding buddy turned bartender) it seems THE party is going to be at the Whiplash Bar & Grill in Topeka. Located at 21st and California (go north on Topeka Boulevard to 21st Street from Heartland Park and then east to California) the place offers plenty of parking, great food and a fun atmosphere. Cliff is currently working on a 31(?) Ford among other projects and has been a gearhead for as long as I can remember. When you get there, ask him about his V8 Vega.
Don, yes, I did count the SASNAK.... I haven't been there for years (20 maybe?) but it is still open and they still have their hotdog special, from what I understand. Enter at your own risk..... (ACK!)

Guys, keep in mind y'all gonna have to keep the beer off the grass. Not because it is bad for the grass, but due of the local laws, the beer has to stay in the bar or on the beer deck. Outside of that, you can get fined for open container in public. Sorry... but that's the way it is.
Kim & Cliff are looking forward to seeing everyone!

This weekend on the Food Network (no snide remarks please, in exchange for my family tolerating my carjunkie habit I tolerate their viewing choices LOL) there is a show called 'Diners, Drive-ins and Dives' hosted by Guy Fieri. They featured “Bobos” a drive in burger joint in Topeka. A peek through Google has pictures of a place that looks like Mel’s in American Graffiti. Anyone comment from the locals??

Bobo's has old-school drive-in food. They still serve everything in a paper bag and the burgers and onion rings drip enough grease on the paper to make it semi-transparent. They don't have a lot of parking, but the service at the car is great. What really shines at Bobo's, however, is the apple pie and ice cream. My folks would take me to Bobo's in the summer when I was a kid and I can still remember the taste of that wonderful apple pie. Bobo's is located at 10th & Macvicar in Topeka. To get there from Heartland Park, go north on Topeka boulevard to 10th Street. Take 10th Street west to Macvicar. It is about a mile and a half from Topeka Boulevard to Macvicar. Along 10th Street, you will drive by Topeka High School. It is on the north side of the road, about 3 blocks west of Topeka Boulevard at the corner of 10th & Western. THS is first high school west of the Misssissippi to cost more than one million dollars to build, is my alma mater, and is absoultely beautiful. It also has a kick-ass auto mechanics department where I learned much of what I know about cars.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/81/100_6317.jpg
^^^^^^^^^^
Picture of Topeka High School tower
Just west of Topeka High School at 10th and Washburn is the Topeka Public Library. This is another beautiful building, directly across the street from Stormont-Vail regional medical center. Remember where the medical center is. It may come in handy for those who over-indulge at Bobo's.
If you head north on Macvicar from Bobo's, at 21st Street you will come across Washburn University. Washburn is on a beautiful campus which is surrounded by a nice, wide sidewalk. On this sidewalk, at any given time during the summer, you will find college hotties jogging or walking their dogs. I was fortunate to live 2 blocks north of campus for almost 2 years. Yeah, buddy!
I hope you folks enjoy your stay in Topeka and if you need any more info, let me know.

Kim brought this fantastic band in to entertain the Power Tour participants and she sounded excited that everyone will be coming over for a good time. Josh will NOT disappoint you! After returning from Atco, Monday afternoon, I spent a couple of hours on the microphone at Heartland Park announcing the cars as they went down the strip. I bailed out of that and went down to see all the festivities and was absolutely stunned by the number of kickass machines that showed up at the track. I had a chance to talk with Don Hardy Jr. who is one class act and the son of the guy who revolutionized drag racing with his V8 Vega/Monza conversions.
Around 5:45, I decided to turn home and get a shower and something to eat and headed out to The Whiplash around 8:00. Man, what a show! Josh Vowell & The Rumble ROCKED that place. I was able to meet up with the British Contingent who were taking rides around the block in Leo DaPrato Jr's badass 1963 Dodge Polara 500 and Brian Tabor's wicked cool 1961 bubble top Chevy Impala. Also joining in on the festivities were Leonard and his wife from Michigan with their 318-powered 1937 Plymouth and a group from Canada in a 4.6 Mod-motor powered Jaguar.
A big thanks to Josh & the band as well as Kim, Tracy and Cliff at The Whiplash for bringing live music to Topeka on a Monday night. I hope to see all of you again when you pass through town.
