    Muffler shootout..

How about a shootout?? -A mufler shootout, that is.

-I'd love to see tests with 'new' designs like 'spintech' vs. old designs. -even 20 dollar mufflers. -maybe even a dragtest.

Maybe a review of the differences in tone?? -record the differnet mufflers in a car, maybe??

    Re: Muffler shootout..

I like that idea. The video format is perfect for this one using a chassis Dyno. A car with a 400-450 HP engine would give a good sound comparison for most street guys to hear and see.

There is one thing that I have discovered about mufflers. The same muffs sound completely different with different engine combo's. How do I know? I have been using the same Flowtech Terminators with the many setups on my 383 from the it's original smog legal set-up to it's current roller cam set-up. I had these muffs on my 73 Impala which is where the 383 originally was for 18 months before I bought and installed it in my 65 Impala. I just unbolted the exhaust from one car and put it in the other.

Pretty good idea. I'll add it to the list.

            Re: Muffler shootout..

I like the idea....Why not the same mufflers on different cars. I've alway heard the old story about Flowmaster 40's make a Mopar sound like a Chevy or Ford....

Okay, do they really? I liked the sound in my old 318 Barracuda....people said it sounded like a big block :D Didn't sound Fordish or Chevyish at all, but that may have been the tinitus masking things :o

So why not have a street shootout, same mufflers swapped out into different cars (Camaro, Mustang, Challenger for example) that are similar in size, engine cubic inches and pipe size etc...

I'd volunteer my '64 300 in a heartbeat if it actually ran at the moment :-\

My favoite so far is the 40 series by Flowmaster but I would like to see/hear a comparison to spin tech.

I dislike chambered mufflers. Flowmasters belong on trucks in my opinion. I love my Magnaflows though Dynomaxes are still my favorite. They just didn't make a set that fit under my Riv.

I'm really happy with the Edelbrocks on my Mustang, but I seem to be the only one. I didn't want Flowmasters after riding in my buddy's 'Stang with them - they would beat you to death at highway speeds. Edelbrocks don't do that. I don't have a clue as far as HP losses, but I'm doing 300 RWHP in a car with full emissions equipment, so it can't be too bad.

I'd like to see the power Curves for the different Muffler Set ups. You could start with a single exhaust and Move to Dual , then try different Tube Sizes, mufflers, Collectors even X-Pipe vs H-Pipes. Find the ulntimate Exhauste for Power. Then you can go on Tone alone, some guys/Gals just like the Sound of the exhaust. Us LSR Guys would like to know upper and Lower end Torques for all of these to.

I Loved the Show you guys did on Intakes, it is endless on the amount of experimentation that you can do and have the different avenues of getting the info out to all of us hungry for it. Hopefully none of the Manufacturers get thier panties in Wads when you prove some of thier setups arn't as advertised. Maybe they should watch the Video's to.

A single large pipe vS. smaller duals would be cool too....Didn't somebody do a Dippy a while back with a 3" single to stay legal emissions wise?

Also if this test hasn't been done yet......I would like to see decibel reading done in & out of the vehicle......I like loud tone but dont like resonance in the cab/interior area.
That steely eyed look I had behind the wheel was me trying see..........

Matt King did a comparo several years back in Car Craft....not all brands were represented(likely due to time constraints and/or not wanting to have their stuff being "shown up"), but the article did show HP numbers and decibel levels.

I think the original Cherry Bombs took top honors in "loudness"(only topped by straight pipes).

Some people complain of certainm mufflers tendencies to "drone", or have interior resonance....me, I like to hear the engine. Perhaps that's why I liked the 80-series crossflow Brand "F" that I had on my last red Camaro...LOL

An updated comparison with no holds barred would be great....that, and prices revealed. Some of these folks are mighty proud of their silencers judging by the sticker prices on them...LOL
