Ditto - hearing tales from DMV staff would definitely benefit the junkie!

        Not DMV, but SCDOT.(truck cop)
A good friends' cousin is a Sgt.
        (Jennifer....a reeeealy cute cop! ;))

Cool thing, if it's to register a kit car, home-made, to register/title a newly built trailer,......stuff like that,....here in SC, its the HP or DOT that signs off...then the SCDMV is allowed to issue a title. They are responsible for determining "road worthiness".

They are also the only group that can stop you for ANY reason....even just to "inspect" your car! No broken law, no weaving, no obvious mechanical problems...just to inspect your car mechanically....

and let Fido, the drug dog, out-to-pee while your stopped there.........

thats why SC has one of the largest drug arrest rates in the entire US, the I-95 corridor.

Don't know about the rest of the country but here in Michigan we go to the Secretary of States office where they hire the bottom of the barrel where possible. Occasionally they are forced to hire someone with a brain. I dread going there. Don't know anyone personally though. They must be smarter than I thought

You can always tell how long a DMV employee has been working there by the width of their ass and their amount of apathy towards doing their job.

In Australia its called the RTA (road traffic authority) Up untill about 5 years ago I would get that cold sweat, sick in the pit of the stomach feeling any time I had to go near the place. Then somthing changed, Im not sure what but along with a 'take a number and sit down untill its your turn' system, the staff got a lot friendlier and actually became helpfull. Today I went there to register two cars and got the guy to check if I had registered another one about a month earlier as I couldnt remember, and seemed to have lost all the paper work. He couldn't have been more helpfull! The car was registered so he made me up a new set of papers. For free! Weird Huh? It's like they have just realised we actually pay their wages! I couldn't have been happier, but as I walked out I still got that uneasy feeling for a second, as if when I looked back they would all be laughing and the jokes on me. Hard to get used to. Weird.

I work for a major police dept, in the traffic bureau, so I can usually find the "right" answer to most of the questions.

                      Re: DMV Employees

Here we have to pay tax on what the DMV, who never even sees the car, determines the value will be. So my trips to the DMV usually go something like this:

DMV "You paid $700 for it?"

Me "Yeah, I fixed it up some"

DMV "Well, if you're registering it it must be pretty nice"

Me "Well not really, it's driveable but needs work to pass inspection. I thought if it was registered I would be able to drive it to work and finish some stuff on it.'"

DMV "The Old Car Price Guide says it's worth $7,500 in number 3 condition. That will be $450 tax, plus registration, plus new plates fee, plus title fee, $560 please."

Me "You've never seen the car, it's not worth $7500, and besides I only paid $700 for it."

DMV "Well that's what the book says"

Funny thing is the Georgia DMV (actually, it's called the DDS) usually values my cars at less than what I paid for them. The only exception so far's been the Ram 50 since that one was free.
