Harbor Freight, just do it, the one I bought works just fine.

^^^^ that's pretty much what I have - it's done the job so far. I'd still like to get something for holding round stock.

Northern Tools has higher quality Chinese junk a lot of times. I didn't think enough of the HF ones to buy one. Sears is supposed to have one that is a little better.

Getting away from China is a 10x proposition... instead of 50.00 plan on 500.00.

I have a cheezy chinese one I got at sears years ago, it works ok. The cheezy chinese mill vise on my cheezy taiwanese mill works even better, and weighs about 10 times as much.

Good luck affording a "real" vise.

Taz, I understand your dilemma. I WANT decent, American-made stuff but it's just out of my price range. I've had some success on Craigslist - got my Rockwell bandsaw there but it's taken a bit of tweaking to keep the blade on. Anyhow, for me it's CL or used and I pick used when I can.

I looked at the h/d and they had nada..
no money at the moment so I think I'll screw two 2by4's together and put the q jet base plate between then to stand the base square to the drill to install the bushings

I bought a nice Rockwell piece at a used machine tool store. I'd go that way or school auctions (sadly) or Craigs list, American quality, used price. I have a buddy who has outfitted and amazing shop all with used high end gear bought at auctions. He's learned to fix things like press brakes, rotary punches and such. I got a massive three phase rotary converter for $120 as part of a larger lot of stuff so I can run three phase equipment off my garage's single phase 220 line. Three phase tools go way cheaper at auction because of the power requirement.

You may want to check ENCO for cheap china crap too, probably on par with HF or Northern... my HF cheapy drill vise serves it's purpose and if I drill through it... who cares.

It is a shame though, seems like the consensus on enthusiast boards is that we'd be willing to pay double or triple the china price for USA, anymore though, even "made in USA" just means "assembled and packaged in USA. I'm at the point where I don't care, I just want someone to build something that's not garbage, I don't care if they make it on mars.

sorry, years ago they figured out that to have you as a repeat customer, their product has to wear out or break
you'd think it be greener to build it right the first time..
