    My children are being brainwashed

We move around alot so it is hard to get involved in local sports (or local anything else for that matter.) But I must say Opening Day in Boston is like nothing else I've experienced before. My young and impressionable daughters are now part of the Red Sox Nation and I'm pretty sure they've never seen an inning of baseball.

They both came home from school (one First Grade the other preschool--in a church!) yesterday with pictures they drew of Wally the Green Monster (Monstah). My older daughter was singing 2 versions of "Take me out to the ball game" (one is the traditional version, the other for when they start 0-6 and the fans turn "Boo, Boo, Boo for the home team...") She also told me that the kids who stay after school while their parents work were sitting in front of the tv watching the game.

They were just going on and on about opening day in general. I told them that the Sox beat the Yanks yesterday on opening day and my daughter exclaimed, "Go Sox!"

Why wait for the teachers to get them excited, why not take care of that yourself? It doesnt take much really, start showing them pics from Hubble and right there you are getting math, science, and history all in one. Kids love dinosaurs, that is history and science. Even if they arent gearheads they can use the same math we use to build engines and make cars perform to do other things. They key to math is showing them how fun it can be, how useful it is, and taking the mystery out of it so they can wrap their minds around it.

The best part about history is it is already done, so you dont have to wait to find out what happened, unlike the future. If they are getting into baseball there is a HUGE opportunity to get them into averages and stats, the history of the game, even of the town they live in. Go find out with them, show them the world around them from a fun perspective that lets them explore a little. Take them around to see all the stuff from the 1700s and earlier that are in the city. Let them be curious about things, encourage them to ask why and how and where about anything.

If you are excited about it eventually they will be too. How do you think I ended up with two gearhead daughters? Although one wants to design video games, and the other wants to be a cardiologist. The teacher only has them for a while each day, you have them for a much longer time. The entire life you spend together can be part of teaching them the wonders of the universe and getting them interested in it.

        Ok forget it.

I was not bashing teachers or teaching, they are both in GREAT schools. I was trying to make a humorous observation about living near Boston and Red Sox fans.

Tom had his Pedroia shirt on yesterday and the Jack man had his little Lackey shirt on when I got home from work. Both were yapping at the door about how we had beaten the Yanks. My wife was tuned into the game. At my old job I used to go "visit" customers on Opening Day every year. By that, I mean I was drinking beer and hanging out by Fenway all day. Truly one of the great days of the year in the city. The place is ALIVE!

Pete, your daughters have taken to the side of all that is good and right....not to the darkness that exists about 300 miles south of us (cue: Darth Vader music).

I hope Bostons opening day went better than the Dodgers. It made the national news and not in a good way. They are still looking for those two A hole thugs. LAPD will now be out in force at the stadium. A little late.

Yeah sox fans are nuts, no doubt. Try moving to Nebraska and not turning into a Husker fan... you grow up there and its in the DNA...

Also I wasnt ripping on you or teachers, just more saying how fun it is to get involved with the kids.

Re: My children are being brainwashed

Did y'all see the news story today where some superstar All-Star baseball player (Manny -somebody?) opted to retire from the sport rather than take a 100-game suspension for failing the drug test for a second time? Good deal. All professional sports should have rules just about that strict. If our kids look up to them, take a look at what the kids see.

Maybe the NFL could take a look at that...
