I am going to replace the alternator on my employee's '99 Dodge Intrepid (3.2 litre), anything I should know, or is it a pretty straight forward install?

Re: Intrepid alternator
Plenty of room with the tiny engine, the DOHC 3.5 is still pretty easy to work on. That being said I hate dodge and working on them.

Re: Intrepid alternator
Tim, I dont know where the 3.5's alt is but if it like the smaller 2.7, you have to go in from underneath the car...I had to put mine on a rack and pull it down. Was a PITA.If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark DonohueComment

Re: Intrepid alternator
Working on GM or Ford compared to working on a Dodge, yes everything on the Dodge is a PITA. Compared to an Omni or a Caravan with a 3.0, the Intrepid is easy, but still a PITA compared to GM. Just wanted to clarify. Easy or simple is relative, I want to smack whoever decided Dodge water pumps should need 32 bolts of different sizes in both SAE and metric, some with metric heads or nuts and the other end SAE all on the same engine. At least the Intrepids are all metric.Comment

Re: Intrepid alternator
Thanks guys, it took me 15 minutes to replace the alternator on my GMC, I'm thinking this will take a bit longer.Busted down to regular BangshifterComment

Re: Intrepid alternator
'Modern' cars suck! After pulling apart most of the front end to change the F'ing alternator, It went on half ass'ed easy. Though when I jumped it, got it running, I took the jumper cables off it ran for a few minutes then died. Just like when a car has a bad ALTERNATOR! It's not my car so I couldn't beat the shit out of it with a cresent wrench. I was told it could be an in-line fuse, or I was sold a bad alternator by Murray's. Who knows, any suggestions? I wasted the nicest day of the year so far doing this. There are probably real mechanics on this site laughing at my ineptitutde, I tried though...Busted down to regular BangshifterComment

Re: Intrepid alternator
Like changing a headlight on a '99 Grand Am? What should take 30 seconds took 30 minutes, talk about a PITA. Though changing the battery on my Stratus wasn't quite so easy, but that's the price to pay for cramming the biggest engine you could into a small engine compartment. ;DOriginally posted by Thumpin455Working on GM or Ford compared to working on a Dodge, yes everything on the Dodge is a PITA. Re: Intrepid alternator
We hired a 20+ year gm mechanic to work here at the dodge dealership about a year ago.He claims working on dodges is way better than working on GM's.Said he wished he would have "defected" years ago. When it comes down to it nothing newer than about 1978 is very fun to work on.Comment

Re: Intrepid alternator
The headlights and the brackets holding them took me all of ten minutes to replace and adjust on my 98 Gran Prix. The headlights on the 97 Intrepid require you to take off the front fascia so you can get to the lower two bolts, because there are 7 that hold each light. The GP has two. It takes me over an hour to get the headlights swapped on an Intrepid, and we scrapped one of them because it had an electrical problem that I couldnt find after 6 days of chasing wires. My daughter wants the purple one so I still have ot mess with the, even though I really hate them.Originally posted by moparmaniac07Like changing a headlight on a '99 Grand Am? Most Dodges you need to remove half the freakin car to get to one little thing, its like a honda engineer had a bad day and wanted to make things as impossible as possible. I really hate working on Honda too, I think I would rather use a judicious amount of C4 to rectify the problem than work on another honda.Comment

they will not run without a good battery....the alt will not keep them going like the old cars...test your battery...HAHA, you know how to pull that damn thing? you have to take the right front tire off. LMAO...I was so happy when mine got towed away after being totaled....EFF that car!If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark DonohueComment
