Re: came across the oddest set up today at junkyard
that was probably good choice if frames are inspected at build time.
there are opposite extremes with the 3/4 ton..
my bros v8 2500 broke frame under the cab..
many many more than not looked like hell sagging and twisted or both.
then there is chance to find a 2500 with >250k on a diesel, without even needing hinge alignments at the doors. straight as an arrow on a long frame. ???
all 3/4 tons.
elusive for some time. too sneaky today.. the old ones had their tricks to decipher, weak from strong, ignoring numbers...but its way worse now. :

I worked on an Astro van one time that had a 4.3 with a Q-Jet on it.
Thought that was pretty cool.

the 4.3 with the Qjet is known as the Astro engine. At least that's where you find the Qjet intake and the right distributor for swapping a newer one into an older vehicle. 1985-86 I think.
You have to swap the ignition module in the HEI for an older one to work without the computer. And find an older qjet.

I bought a new 1/2 ton in 87 and it was a 4.3 carbed FI (what was that throttle body?) with a three on the tree. One of the most dependable vehicles I ever owned. Sold it with 190,000 miles on it and it still ran great. That was back in the day, so it took some late nite abuse . . . and had a "homing" device on it.

Not really, the trans needs to hold up to the load behind it, not just the engine in front of it. C6 was a common sight in 6 cyl ford trucks in the 80s, and the 727 was used behind the slant six for decadesOriginally posted by Tazracingthe odd, was a th400 behind a v6
seems overkill

That's it, sounds like a bare bones 3/4 ton, so it had the most basic but strong trans available.
cheers
