    school me on 4.6/5.4's

what are some cheap and potent 4.6/5.4 engine combos?

ive been thinking of maybe putting one in the fox lately but i only know a little bit about these motors and id like to learn more

what should i look for? stay away from? etc.

what would it take to put one in my fox?

n/a, turbo and supercharged suggestions are all welcome, but id prefer for it to be supercharged, using a factory blower to keep the costs down

    thanks guys!

            Navi motors are 4v.

                Re: school me on 4.6/5.4's

I'm not a big mod motor fan. A lot of the early truck 5.4 engines seemed to enjoy shooting spark plugs out of the heads. Ford even had their own helicoil kit.

The mod motors tend to have a stout bottom end that lends itself well to boost, but I don't think the power for dollar value is very good. Plus you have to deal with timing chains that are longer than a Catholic wedding.

My dad has had a couple of pickups with the 4.6. They were all very reliable but also couldn't get out of their own way. Bad fuel mileage and they were hunting around all the time.

Ummm... About that whole stout bottom end thing... They've got hypereutectic pistons that do not do well with boost or nitrous. I stopped messing with them in 2001 so I can't say what the engines made after that are like, but the aluminum 32V would ALWAYS blow a chunk out of the #7(?) piston if nitrous or boost was applied to it. The only ones I saw live had only a couple pounds of boost or less than 75 shot and were babied.
                  I'm probably wrong

                      Re: school me on 4.6/5.4's

There's an article in the latest MM&FF on putting a 4.6L 3V in a Fox body.

I'm really happy with the Whipple-supercharged 4.6L 3V in my '08 Bullitt. The previous owner had it dyno tested at PHP, got a max of 415.28 RWHP, 399.18 torque, max boost of 10.26 psi. I haven't run it at the drag strip yet because I need to get some wider rims and drag radials first, but it hauls ass.

I was talking to a guy at work today who's been looking for a 4.6L 4V to put in his Fox body Mustang, but he said they're kind of pricey at the wrecking yard due to their popularity.

They have had a tendency with popping plugs out , the motorite/ help part to fix it with a Autolite HT1 plug is sold out as of right in my job.

I've had alot of them as of lately with high mileage 5.4 and very few 4.6 Motors.

IIRC Mark 4.6 4v have a cast crank, not a forged like the Cobra's. The Cast cranks cannot take the boost like the forged ones. However the Aluminum Mark blocks are pretty stout.
