    Eleanor Rigby

Hanging out at Weeville, shooting pool, got the music going in peewee's pool hall - life is grand on a weekend. Sure is.

We've got a meduim-large collection of music CD's and vinyl albums, maybe a total of ...maybe 400 "albums" that I accumulated over the years.

Felt in the mood to hear Aretha Franklin. She gets my vote for the best pure female singer of all time. I've got her 30 greatest hits on a double CD. I haven't listened to it in about 20 years. Why don't I think to just turn on the stereo? That's all you have to do, just turn it on, and there it goes. Even MORE entertainment when things are fun.

Aretha did "Eleanor Rigby," the great Beatles song. But she didn't just cover it. She gave it an Aretha twist. The song is actually unrecognizable from the Beatles' version. But IMHO, it's a better song than when the Beatles pushed it out.

So, what other songs have been "interpreted" by other artists and came out so different?

I'll start - and it's not by "another" artist. Clapton's acoustic remake of Layla on the Unplugged CD blew everybody's mind to start with during the live performance. Nobody in the audience recognized the song until he started singing. And IMHO the acoustic version is much better.

    So, more examples of such?

    Re: Eleanor Rigby

this is an opinion.. I don't real like either listed above, as far as the whom does a song better the original or the cover,
depends on when you grew up.
take van halens cover of the kinks "you really got me" or pretty woman, good time gone..
I love the vh song, and only like the original, why, 1) the original was before my time and 2) (and this is very important)
the van halen song was the original to me, meaning it's the one I heard first, the kinks recorded it first, but I heard it years later, at a kinks show ( I had the kinks ,give the people what they want album,.
I grew up with v.h. and that version of those songs are the ones I rocked to..
triuph, my first song was magic power, first album was stages( a live album) as I bought other albums of theirs the studio ones (same songs) didn't have the same feel. same thing happened with early kiss, I had alive I &II
but the studio songs where, um lacking,
keel's because the night, is the one I like, but I also rocked out to that one for years before hearing the other versions of it..
whe I hear a cover of a song that was my generation, I tend to not like it, as much as the original, but some that are covers that are from my time that I never heard before, I like, manson did(redid) tanted love, love his take on it, but I never heard the original, and I have since, and it's a totally different song, just in the way the music is, the sond, the original is to happy in the music part of it, mansons deeper, darker take, fits the song more..

Uh, no...Bruce did it in 73 and Manfred did it in 77

also, Manfred changed the lyrics to Revved up like a Duce, Buce's lyrics were "cut loose like a Duce"

Gotta mention Devo's cover of "Satisfaction"... it wasn't better than the Stones version, but I knew a lot of college kids back in the 80's who thought Devo wrote the tune first.

And Johnny Cash made "Hurt" the definitive version of Trent Reznor's song.

OR, Foghat's "I just Want to Make Love to You." What a classic head-banging rock song.

No, that was a song Muddy Waters released in 1954.

So there ya go. The majority of everybody who listens doesn't know what they are actually listening to, but they know it's a good song. And that's all. It's doesn't matter to most folks, the history of it.

It matters to me. But it makes folks, like Stude said, think it's an original song. Uhhhh, not it ain't.
