Doing the father/son thing with my 63 yr old dad. We have been prepping the 64 Chevelle for this outing. He works for the company I founded, so we get to take 9 days off for fun stuff like this.

It will be my lovely bride of 26 years as my copilot. The other gentleman that will be going is still looking for someone to travel along with him. His daughter is due with child at about the same time so his wife is staying home.

Looks like I might be going solo this year, but I am trying to talk my nephew into going.
He graduates college in May and I'll spring the trip for a graduation present.

My husband drives most of the time and I'll navigate. Last yr. when I drove I missed a turn off and that was the end of driving for me! i'd rather keep him straight!

My husband and I will take turns with the driving and navigating. Though we did get a TomTom a few months ago so will see how that works. I don't take as many pictures as he likes so I can drive more and he can take pictures of everyone else driving.

I don't have a ham radio, but I will be bringing Walkie Talkies with us, so those of us in our group can keep in touch while on the road. If any of the other freaks have them, maybe before the tour begins we could all pick a channel to be on, so we could keep in touch incase of problems, or if we need to find each other at the venues.

We got business cards made up with cell phone numbers in case of emergency or just for general info. It was $15 for 250 of them.

We got a Tom Tom a couple months ago, tried a bunch of different GPS's and liked the Tom Tom the best. Hope that we are able to get the PT route into it and see if it keeps us from getting lost or helps us to get lost! Last year we just had Rand McNalley to guide us,(and the PT route they gave us). Has a detour function on it that we thought might help if we need it.

Last year the ole Tom Tom saved us a ton of time. The road block feature saved us in Racine.
We were in bumper to bumper traffic entering the venue and could see on the Tom Tom that it was like 3 miles to the park. So I entered in that the road was blocked. Tom Tom gave us an alternate route that took us in the back way. We drove right in with little to no traffic.

I've been looking at a TomTom to replace KenKen! ;D ;) ::) We have a PT buddy here in Colorado that sells them, might have to see what kind of deal we can get. My son and his girlfriend have one that you don't have to plug into the cig lighter. That would be great since we don't have a lighter in the Chevelle. :P

As usual my Co-pilot is my Father. I would not do the long hauls with anyone else! Some day I will look back on it and think of all the found memories and the time we spent together waiting in TRAFFIC!!! LOL!!!! Oh yes I have a TOM TOM also cause dad could not run my hand held Garmin and we always fight over the somewhat incomplete map Chrome gives us every year!

i didn't know they had GPS's that you don't have to plug into the lighter(as you can tell i havn't looked into these to much). my co-pilot has a GPS's but if i bring the 47 it has a 6 volt system so i wont be plugging anything into the cigarette lighter. i guess i need to check into these a little closer.

I think most of them have a battery backup in them. The question is, how long does the battery live before needing a recharge.

My wife is my co-pilot and she'll be the one with the maps. This is our first tour, so some of you veterans enlighten me- do most participants take the same route/leave at the same time each day? I was envisioning a huge pack of Power Tour cars on the road each day, like you always see in the magazine coverage, but it looks like most of you have navigation units of some kind. Do you really need one? Is there a potential to get lost on the tour?

not everyone leaves at the same time and same place. if you make the drivers meetings that is when you hit the huge crowds of cars. we didn't go to any drivers meetings last year but we will make some this year to see how they are. most people take the main route that is mapped out. there are alot of side trips that you could and should take while you're in a new part of the country that will give you the potential of getting lost. getting in the cities and making it to the venues sometimes is confusing. you get all of the power tour traffic and the normal traffic you can and will(we did) get lost. if you have good maps and a "good" map reader(key point of having a map) you don't need a gps. if you don't, it could help.

We made it with no problems last yeat without a GPS but we're bringing one this year just in case. We got a little lost last year a couple times but that was trying to find the hotel after the events. :o

We didn't have a GPS either last year and did fine with our maps. Had problems finding the hotels using the directions we got from Mapquest. We did get a GPS for Christmas so will have one this year. Last year we went to all the drivers meeting except one, a few though we left a little before everyone else trying to avoid the big traffic jam.

I just use a Rand McNally atlas. It got me around the bottle neck coming out of K-zoo last year when I was having trouble with the van.

Last year the trip was with my son (31), and 2 step sons (22 & 25). A guys road trip for 3 of the days. None of them had gone before, and now all are hooked. For this year the 22 year old is taking my Nova with a friend of his, and may do the long haul. I'm blessed enough to have 2 Corvettes, with the 31 year old taking his wife in one, and the 22 year old is hitching a ride with mom in hers, going on just the last 2 days. Me, I'll find a buddy and plan to do 4-5 days in my Purple '93 Camaro pictured below. It'll have for sale signs in it. If anyone knows someone interested, it's a VERY streetable Pro Street car. Has PS, PB, PWindows, PSeats, A/C blows cold, 468" big block, 700R4 trans, roll bar, 14 gallon fuel cell, fully carpeted interior, and does draw some looks. Builder was a GM mechanic who fooled with everything to make it work right (speedo too). It IS fun to drive, and I'm not kidding, driveable. Looking forward to the trip, as I'm sure ALL are!
