Every time I see one of these I get a different answer for what Scott means.

Now, this site says that Scott means "From Scotland".

It's entertaining, but I'm not sure how accurate any of these are.

a "russ" could be in the same family...

go for genealogy if you want to dig deeper. Sometimes a name as loosely dynamic as american would make it comes from a subconscious source...older than dad naming his son ever thought of. As if sacred genes speak your language to name a newborn..
