    need a new job....

not looking for sympathy, I know there are many more out there in worse shape...

I changed jobs 2 months ago, left a steady company that I had been with for almost 8 years with good pay etc. to work for a company closer to home..... Needless to say, took a slight pay cut, but it was more than made up for in extra time (ie. 1 hour less commute each direction)

Anyhow, 2 months after taking a leap of faith to work for a guy that had been a customer of mine for 5 years, he tells me today that I am being laid off, and that he will be letting 2 of the other 3 people that work for him go as well...... Evidently not on near as solid ground financially as I was told before making the move. I guess that because I was by far the youngest there (30 soon) and made more than anyone else I was the easiest to send out the door first, but it still sucks.

I haven't been without a full time gig since I was 14, I guess I'll get to go file for EI that I have been paying into for all these years and figure out what the f*$# to do next....

    Now back to my beer.....

I feel for you, as I'm currently unemployed myself.

I'll be back to work soon, and as he said...back to my beer. :D

                  Re: need a new job....

Well, I've been a salesman (yes i know...) since I got out of school. I'm actually a mechanical engineering technologist, but I got into selling steam equipment, heat exchangers & instrumentation straight out of school as I couldn't stomach the thought of staring at an autocad screen 5 days a week....

The recent job was selling stainless steel equipment into food processing plants (and as a bonus - many performance shops use the fittings & tube from sanitary equipment for exhausts, turbo installs, etc) also selling pumps for sanitary and industrial applications.

At this point i'm not sure what to do. My true passion is anything automotive (and I have been an auto tech before going back to school).

I guess I file for EI and try and figure out what to do.... I hate the concept of filing for EI it makes me sick to my stomach to do it, but realistically I have a mortgage a wife and 2 little kids, so you have to do what you have to do.

I know I can go back to the previous job, but money aside, I f*#&ing hated it. Bored as hell & the owner who I really do look up to was in the process of selling part of the company to a jackass from big business who thought he was brilliant and everyone else without an MBA was just an idiot (never mind that my sales were way more profitable than his - he has an MBA and that makes him WAY smarter than anyone else, and if you don't agree just ask him)

My immediate options are A) go back to old company B) look for something new C) team up with dad & start a new company (he's in a similar field and is fed up with his boss) or D) try and find something I actually want to do for the next 30+ years....

Yep, I'm whining like a little b*#$%, I'm just trying to figure out what the hell I'll do....

and PS - changing jobs did give me a great reason to buy a 70 GMC truck as the new (I guess former now) job did not require me to drive a Caddy (though I still have the pos CTS that I haven't been able to sell yet)

I feel for you guys, was laid off for 10 weeks last year. Where I work, they have never called anyone back from layoff. I was almost positive I was done. They called me back, but only 2 of 6 they laid off at the time. The others are done since they have hired new. At 53 I feel real good to be back.

Anyway I hope for the best for you guys,I know what its like, at least 10 weeks worth.

Keep your heads and spirits up guys. Don't let it bring your families down. I was in the same spot for a couple months in the fall. I took a consulting job for 4 months and was brought on full time recently. This new position has opened many new doors. Remember it is not a door closing but the start of a new chapter in the story of life.
Chevy, I am in the semi-conductor/MEMS industry and know many people in the process and instrumentation business if I can send anyone a resume for you. If you like what you are doing, check in with you local Swagelok, Parker, MKS etc. type companies.

Do you and your dad have a good relationship? If you do, go for it!

I work with my dad, and love it.

Min, did they give you a reason for layoff with your walking papers? If it is UI payable they have no choice.
