View Full Version : Pictures of your Daily Drivers - hot rods no KIAs please

I want to see pics of cars you guys daily drive that are hot rods. I have never wanted a muscle car just for Saturday afternoons, I want to drive them any time I drive. I put 30k in a year on a '70 'cuda w/360 crate motor & Keisler 5 speed a few years back, I could out run a 6 speed LS1 Camaro and get 20mpg. Looking to get back into driving something I like instead of the import car I have now and want to get some ideas.

My newfangled 87 Ranger with a carb'd 5.0L and 5 speed. I generally don't like cars newer than late 60's but this serves me well. Runs 12's, drives great, gets good mileage... i think i need to find a 40 Ford sedan delivery body to drop on the chassis.

You know there has to be a story in there somewhere about a guy with a real hot rod type KIA don't you?

Yep we have a guy John Randy Streeter who runs a KIA at Maxton and he's gotten better Every meet this year... Came in fairly well in the Points gig with us and basically drove the poop outta this thing...

Again it's one of those deals were the guy loves the car... does everything he can with what he's got... and doesn't hang around dreaming of junk he doesn't own...

Like it or not... He's a Hard core Junkie... ( with a freaking Kia )

i've got a 5RUNNER that gets driven like it's stolen. but, i guess it gets put into that 'kia' catagory. it's a 2wd, so i'll keep the michelins, but those intake baffles had to go. I'm hot rodding as I can. maybe it'll get the trd blower, but more likely when I grenade the powertrain it'll get an overcammed sbc & a turbo 350...

I have put over 5 thousand miles on this car since the EMS pro install, she's down now for ball joints, ( can't get em anymore). It wont see snow... but is my fair weather daily, when it snows I drive the '93 honda hatch.

Keith -
Thanks for speaking up for Randy. We'll have to make sure he knows about this site. As Keith said, Randy's the real deal, too. I don't know why he started with a Kia (temporary insanity?) but he's worked the little devil up to near 120 - in fact, he may have made it. That was his goal for last season. His Kia is significantly quicker than my Camaro was last season, but I hope to kick tail next year with the addition of some actual HP. "Hope" is the operative word! We're getting to where we kind of like the guy!

I purchased this '63 Nova in Spring (2007). It has a 355 dynoed at 346hp, turbo 350, and 3:73's. I use this to get to breakfast & work 3-4 times a week, did some minor mods to bring it on drag week (13.30's), and have some fun.

I took these pictures today. There's nothing fancy about my car. I've owned it for a month and all I've really done is put on a new intake, carb, some hoses, filters, valve covers, gaskets, etc. Mostly maintence and exploration type things. The new headers and dual exhaust should be going on tomorrow, dual flowmasters and 21/2" pipes off ceramic coated hedman elites.
Like I said, nothing too fancy, it's my get-around car for now. The bushings are all shot, so I dare not put too much power into it now.

Falconizer - do you print money for a living or what?

So far I see some awfully nice cars in your stable - your daily driver 'stang is about as nice as most you see at shows around here, man you guys outside the salt belt just make me crazy! (jealousy is a horrible thing)

no wonder your wife is AOK with the wagon - I don't know many ladies that wouldn't love to drive that red coupe every day!

let me guess - nice small block with an aod - vintage air, and nice tunes right?

The first thing I realized after moving from the salt bed, Omaha, to Cali was that would probably cheaper to buy a rust free car here and have it shipped back for a lot less than doing hours of rust repair on one from the midwest.

There are literally dozens of 65-66 Mustangs for sale everyday on Craigslist here in LA that are less than 7 grand. Most running and driving.

milner351, thank you for the kind words. There is no money here, I assure you. I am a starving artist (musician), not to mention the fact that I got nerve damage in both of my arms, and couldn't feed myself or wipe my own butt, or make any income for five years. I couldn't even play a single note, and that hurts!! What I can do now is very limited, but I am one determined mother. (At least I can still drive a stick shift!!) I have to do all of the work myself in my garage, as I can't afford to pay any labor, or rent any space. That's what sucks about blowing up the motor on the roadster. That kind of money is hard to come by :(
you were pretty spot on about the 66 Coupe, though. Nice small block, disc brakes, vintage air, no AOD (yet). Waiting for the C4 to blow, and so-so on the tunes. To be honest I never listen to music when I drive, or anything except the motor for that matter. When you work all day long listening to music, it's kind of nice to have it quiet when you drive. Gives me time to think. Plus compared to a recording studio, a car has way too much of a noise floor, and you can't really hear the details anyway. Plus the sound of the motor is music enough ;D

I really regret that we don't live close enough for me to jump in my truck and bring you one of the AODs laying around in my shop, or some small block parts for that matter - wanna buy my never run stroked windsor for the roadster? ;D got to sell it to raise funds for my FE project -- now that I moved the racing dash far enough to find out the drag car I bought a few years back is a 428cj mach1!
funny how one little letter can change all your plans!

sorry to hear of the nerve damage - that's really scary stuff.

if you ever need a back up drummer - ah heck -- too far away - I keep forgetting that part.

You guys are too cool 8). Thanks a lot. There is a lot of generosity and community with the hot rod crowd. I like that. An AOD would up the gas mileage quite a bit and be great for the long haul. hmmmm...
On that particular car when the old stuff breaks, the upgrades can come. It's never been torn down and built up from scratch.
Milner,... as far as buying your motor goes... my buddy from way back in the day owns Pacific Performance Products (Ford Performance Solutions), and is giving me a sweet deal on a stroked small block. The problem is coming up with the funds for it, because then I need a new clutch, I got to rebuild the trans-etc.. You know the drill...
with the wagon, it has its own fund. Instead of buying a used Saturn, we're making our "payments" on a 10K loan, which is the wagon fund. What's the tricky part is not running out of money on these things, which is why I do it all myself :). It was the same deal on the roadster build. I was 500 bucks short on that budget, which wasn't too bad, but it took four months and a birthday to finally put it on the road. The only money spent on labor was $250 for an interior done in Tijuana.

But I had a plan... see post http://www.carjunkieforums.com/index.php?topic=148.0

milner351

plan the work and work the plan....

and hope the plan doesn't change.

I still have a lot to learn on that subject.

My life still seems to be too often putting out fires / handling emergencies
(like the oak tree that fell in our backyard a couple weeks back and took me 7 trips to the dump and about that many tanks of fuel and oil in the saw to get it cut split and stacked for firewood)

and not often enough planning work and then working that plan....

A friend of mine I used to work with at Honda has always put some money from each paycheck into different savings accounts.
he has one for the cougar, one for the jeep, one for his gas pumps and collectibles....
that's what he uses to work on his stuff - and when the money is gone - he stops.
that's discipline I look up to.

I love the wagon idea on so many levels - especially the fact that you're going with a straight six and it's to be the family hauler - that is incredibly cool - and you'll likely get pretty good MPG with your plan as well, just don't get tires too wide or too sticky --- my life at work is fuel economy and all that goes into it - tires are HUGE part of the system.

I'm rambling - your cars are cool way cool - hopefully sometime in the future we can meet up at an event - first round is on me.

24 mpg from the original Leaning Tower of Power. I swapped in disc brakes and a Sure Grip from a Duster, a decent stereo, and the original AC even kinda works. Unfortunately, I have plans to hot rod it.

18 mpg from the original God-awful 301. But it actually runs good (for a 301,) its bolted to a TH400, and people usually move out of the way when its coming down the road. It too will be hot rodded.
