If you wanna help and have Facebook see this.

The building and tools were insured. Sounds like the cars were not. He's pretty devastated.

why wouldn't the cars be insured?
either by the owners auto insurance..
      or the shop's..
If he had none.. he's got bigger issues..
and the state will be knock'n on his door, to ask why

        WOW

This is a good time to talk about shop safety and fire safety.

never ever ever run your mig welder or torch, then quickly there after close up shop and go home for the night. Those sparks fly and can smolder a good long time. A friend of mine lost his mustang, part of his garage, and almost his house due to a fire cause by welding, then shutting down and going to bed.

I don't know about you guys - but I have not only car coverage with haggerty - but also "project car and parts" coverage.

I would think a business owner would have some sort of "umbrella" for situations like this - I understand it would be really hard to estimate losses in this type of situation.

Man - even if he is covered - this just totally sucks - money can't replace all that was lost.
There's always something new to learn.

no one died, and cars can be replaced..
if he didn't have the required insurance, he might wish he had died tho.

That just sucks. I need to contact Haggerty and see if they can do better for me than the run of the mill company I have now (Kemper). They're OK for our drivers but pretty pricey and limited on the race car and the ones in the shop.

That really sucks for him. Years ago I worked at a hospital that had an old wooden cooling tower for a centrifugal chiller that we were having replaced by a contractor. They too left early after using the gas ax on the bolts and brackets. Shortly after they left, the cooling tower went up in flames! The old wood burned real good with all the chemicals that had soaked in over the years.

Having been through a house fire a little over 2 years ago. Now the worst part is starting for him, dealing with the insurance company if he has a crappy adjuster or company. If you have full replacement value in your policy, you do not get full replacement if you don't replace said item. You get a depreciated amount, Once you buy the new, replacement item, then you'll get the amount of depreciation with held. That can really suck on items you may have gotten at a great price in the past. You should get present value if you stick to your guns. In my case, the adjuster tried to make small talk in getting us to slip on items we purchased below market value. Keep your mouth shut, do your homework on current replacement values!!!!

On a personal note to everyone, I highly recommend getting a safety deposit box at your local bank and keeping all of your important papers, such as birth certificates, passports and so on in it. If your out of your house due to a catastrophe, you will NEED this stuff to get your life back on track and not having it will only make a bad situation only worse.

Once again, even though my fire was relatively small, I can begin to understand what this poor guy is up against. Hope things work out for him...truly!

Re: Wanna help a fellow car guy? Warning, the pics are ugly.

                    Sucks... just sucks.

My brother's bro-in-law had a speed shop back in the 90's... he rented an old bank barn. The parts washer motor overheated and the fluid flashed. The lid was propped open and the fire raged. It burned flat, he lost everything. A dozen nitrous bottles exploded, the firefighters thought there were bullets in the building and scattered. There was a Cuda with aluminum heads and intake, they melted right off the motor and left the valves and rocker studs. It was a hot fire.

It happened on a Saturday night. My dad took me and my other brother down on Sunday and we helped pick tools and junk out, anything that might get looted or sent to the landfill. There was basically nothing to save.

That was when I learned that go-fast parts are not magical, they are made from raw materials and can disappear in a few moments. Few things are truly irreplacable, chief among them is people.
