Automatic shifters, what do you like?

I'm looking to swap out the shifter in the ranger, it's a B&M ratchet shifter - I think a megashifter - and I absolutely hate it - I think it's either worn out or bent or something - it's just completely awful to operate.

I have a hurst in the 69 mustang I maybe able to use - I think it's a quarter stick, not sure if it will work with the AOD.

What shifters do you guys like in your street / strip machines?

I'm also wondering if there is a design that is more or less prone to installation in a bench seat set up.

I saw this one on ebay - looks well made - but I don't want to part with this much $:

I don't like any of them that use the same part number for Ford,GM,and Chrysler applications. The throws are spaced differently between the makes and the "fits all" ones just barely work. I like the TurboAction shifters the best by far, which are the old Winters shifters. The other thing I like about them is that they actually use a big heavy duty Morse cable instead of a cheap little wire cable like almost all the rest. Some of the older Hurst designs are well made too, but I would use a stock shifter before a Quarter Stick. I'll take a used TurboAction over most anything new-they really don't wear out.

90 percent of all aftermarket automatic shifters are junk.

I have the Mega Shifters in the "Stang and in the Buzz Bomb. Not the best, for sure, but they DO work for me. The one in the Buzz Bomb is excellent - greenjunk GAVE it to me so I can't gripe. There is some fishing around sometimes, though. However, they do meet sanctioning body rules for lockouts and the like.

I have a Hurst dual gate in my Charger, it came in it. I have no complaints about. Never used anything else though.

Re: Automatic shifters, what do you like?

I may just end up using a stock 87-93 mustang shifter - modified to fit a bit better in the Ranger with the bench seat.

you just have to tie the cable down..(if the case'n can move it's not tied down enough)

if you don't it works like crap..

I have one in the Camaro, had it a long long time and no issues, works just fine.
If anything the only gripe is lack of thread for the shifter handle.
                      Keep it greased.

Loved my Megashifter in my old '70 Riviera, have one now that's getting canabalized for the mechanism to use the stock "mushroom" handle sticking out of the console for stealth action.

Re: Automatic shifters, what do you like?

I'm more of a fan of detent shifters like the Star Shifter, or even the Z gate, over rachet style. For street driving, any shifter that requires a second hand to get the damn thing in reverse is completely annoying and avoided by me.

Cable operated shifters need the cable placed carefully to prevent melting and sticking from heat of the exhaust and the engine.

X2 on the Cheetah shfiter from Turbo Action.

However, it might be a tough install with a bench seat as the cable is a rear exit and the lever isn't real tall.
