What do you fellow BangShifters protect your vinyl tops with? I put a new top on my Elky and it's going to see some outside time. I have absolutely no experience with vinyl top care and would hate to ruin it. What's the verdict with Armor All? I've heard lots of stories...

Re: Vinyl top care
Since my vinyl top blew off while driving down the freeway; any advice I have should be taken with a grain of salt.Originally posted by meatwagonWhat do you fellow BangShifters protect your vinyl tops with? Re: Vinyl top care
I've used Turtle Wax vinyl top wax on my Cutlass several times over the years and the top still looks like new. It's a liquid that you just wipe on. I scrubbed it good with a soft bristle brush and soap and water first, probably not an issue if your top is new.Comment

Re: Vinyl top care
Some good advice in this thread so far... 303 Protectant. Why? You can use it anywhere on the car. Including the paint... Unlike other protectant products, it does not streak when some gets on the paint. It will also not harm the paint.

Re: Vinyl top care
What kind of stories about armor all? I use the stuff they have for exterior vinyl and trim and it seems to be working so far. The top is only about 4 years old, but it sits outside all summer, and still looks brand new. I haven't seen any adverse affects from armor all yet, but I only use it a few times a summer and that's just to make it look good, not preserve it.Comment

The stories date back to the 80's for me. Guys would swear by it, others at it. They claimed it dried out and cracked the vinyl and rubber they used it on. Tops, dashboards, tires. I know there's always other variables like age and temperature. I don't think I'm taking any chances. I do know not to use it on your seats. My buddy used it on his Harley seat once and entertained the rest of us while he tried to stay on the bikeComment

Re: Vinyl top care
You can use it on your seats if you don't mind sliding under your seat belt and dash when you hit the brakes.
Some say that any protectant spray with silicone (like Armor All) in it is bad for vinyl and rubber in the long run. I haven't seen any definitive evidence one way or the other.
IMO, just keep the top clean. You a soft bristle brush like what they sell for cleaning wheels. I'd get a seperate one for the top though. Brake dust won't look good on a top. Keeping dirt build up out of the crevices keeps them looking good. A car cover when not driving it will help a ton too.BS'er formally known as Rebeldryver

Re: Vinyl top care
I've heard the same stories about it being bad. I don't know enough to know one way or the other but I don't use it-partly for fear the stories are true and partly because I just don't like the look of it. I use Meguire's #40 for interior soft parts-it's not too shiny and slippery like armorall.Originally posted by meatwagonOriginally posted by moparmaniac07What kind of stories about armor all? Re: Vinyl top care
Vinyl X looks great till it gets wet and streaks your paint up REAL bad.
I also use Formula 303 protectant. Expensive, but worth it.Comment
