    Paint inside the motor.

So i am starting to assemble the BBC,and lookin at all the edges and burrs that appear inside a GM engine block,i wonder if i should find a paint to brush on inside the block..just to smooth out all the stuff i havent grinded away.

Shouldnt a normal 2 component paint stay cool inside there?.

      Glyptal. http://www.eastwood.com/glyptal-red-...ccode=ga130060

Painting the inside remains a point of controversy. Some say to do it in oder to trap any remaining casting sand pockets and to enhance oil drainback. Others say that the paint will eventually shed and clog up your oil pump.

Gluing the sand into the block,is my biggest gain here.If i scrape with a screwdriver,i will get some sand on it now and then.Paint will stop that.

And BBChevys are known for having too much oil in the upper parts of the engine.Everything that helps the oil back to the bottom, will be a plus.I have had this block in a acid bath,so its clean and the paint will stick nice.

I've never painted one but I do attack them with the die grinder and remove casting flash, stress risers, and the like to let the oil move more easily. I always worried that the paint would eventually come loose and plug stuff up but I really have no actual experience to show that this would happen. It'll be good to see what folks have to say.

            Just say NO!

I've washed hundreds of blocks and can say that maybe 95% of those with paint/glyptol/whatever on the innerds will eventually have some come off. Once the little pieces start coming, bigger pieces will follow. It may just be small pieces it may be a bunch but it has to go somewhere - like your oil pump.

If you want to help, then grind all the loose flash down

I used glyptol on the inside of my 406 when I first start building it. Problem was I like brake cleaner and as soon as I sprayed some of it on the paint it bubbled right up. Needless to say I took my block and had it vatted and got as much of the glyptol off as I could. Basically from that point on, I feel painting the inside of the engine is just asking for troubles.

Most good machinist will tell you that its a big mistake to paint inside a motor.
generally the paint fails to grasp the steel and will plug up a pump.

did a tear down of a bbc this last year and the pump was half full of a head paint that broke loose in less that a thousand miles.

Like I read her before, JUST SAY NO.

how does the paint get to the pump? I'd think engines like that would have vally screens installed(epoxied)
so the paint can't get out of the top of the engine..

We did coat the valleys and what not with gyptal.
But yes, we also screed the drains.

This was after knocking off all casting flash, and grinding smooth.

After a full cleaning in high pressure bath at the Machine shop,
and another one with brushes , and soapy water and air at home.

Never one had issues with it, screens never clogged w/ anything.

I would try to coat an untouched surface.
As cast, oils in the low spots of the surface,
you wont get a good adhesion to the metal.

After the block has been ground smooth,
you can get excellent adhesion, plus, no chance of hidden oils , and contaminants.

I'm also anti-valley screen. They theory is that if a lifter blows up it will keep the parts in the upper half of the engine. Wrong. Most times when a lifter dies the wheel blows apart and all the little needles are already in the cam tunnel and dropping down rapidly. Also If you were to screen a sbc in the rear it wouldn't take much to block the oil return to the pan especially if you had standoffs in the lifter valley.

I have gyptal protecting the epoxy in my hybrid oil pump but that's all it's there for and it's the backside of the timing cover, not in a direct area of drainback.
