Re: GM Shocked at Profitability of Camaro, 8 of 10 sold are V8 Powered
It's not a guess. CAFE's been driving up prices of V8s (and holding down supplies) for years. It will only get worse as we move toward the 35 m.p.g. CAFE standard. The company then overpriced the V-8, more powerful, less fuel-efficient model to keep its sales down."
Keep the sales down? Yep. We're guessing that was a thought to help CAFE . . . .
It would be interesting to see how a smaller ~ 3.5-4.0 liter V8 would sell as compared to the V6 (as a companion to the big SS V8, of course). Having a V8 is probably more important than the actual size of the V8 to many Camaro buyers. A smaller V8 could yield almost the same fuel economy as a V6, but still produce the sonorous sounds of a V8 when necessary.
If smaller V8s are not developed, the risk is that new V8s will eventually be priced out of the range of blue-collar enthusiasts because of the "CAFE Tax" effect (i.e. OEM/Dealer price increases to reduce sales in order to maintain CAFE fleet averages). This could have a bad trickledown effect on our sport. There would be fewer emissions-homologated installs. There would be fewer salvage yard V8s. There would be less production transfer to the crate engine and aftermarket parts markets.
In the right size car (an AWD or RWD that's smaller than a Camaro), a 2.0 liter turbocharged V8 would totally rock as a sporty commuter vehicle. And with modern tech, it could have a better power-to-weight ratio than a Camaro SS.

They should have put a turbocharged 4200 in it. That would have brought in the high tech crowd that normally buy other non-us brands.
10psi in a 4200 makes for an exciting ride. ;DComment
