I remember the first time the Ormsby car was at a national event. He hit the throttle to do a burnout, the chassis flexed, the plug wires arc'd against the carbon fiber and he launched the blower. The guy who designed the body was an Indy car guy, and had no idea how flexible top fuelers were. He never considered that carbon fiber conducts electricity.

Actually, the carbon fiber body touched the magneto - not the plug wires.
But it was a spectacular explosion as I remember.

As it turned out, streamliner bodies just aren't worth the extra weight for a little aero advantage.

I wonder what happened with that one piece body Amato was working on? It wasn't a streamliner, but the one piece seemed like it would be slipperier than the multiple piece bodies.

It literally went back up into the rafters at the time. Not sure who bought it/got it after Amato sold off the team.

how much could that extra body work weigh? i'd say probably less than 3 gallons of nitro.

Scott, what about the potential drag and weird chassis dynamics it could cause? Could it place extra downforce ahead of the rear wheels instead of right down ON them?

i don't really know about that one. i've used those little side pods (mud flaps) and never noticed a difference.
