Anyone ever play with Carter YH sidedrafts?

    Hey guys

Any of the "oldtimers" here have any experience with an engine running Carter YH sidedraft carb(s)? Good, bad, ugly? I'm asking because I got the idea in my head that one of these carbs from the turbo Corvair application might be made to work on my VW engine if I ever get around to fitting the little Roots-type Toyota blower on. Eventually I'd like to go with Megasquirt as well (I already have a brain box to start), but the YH would help with the "old skool" vibe I'd like to have going under the hood.

    thanks,

Very little, a long time ago. They're pretty stone age-dead simple, maybe too simple. I remember them needing constant fiddling with, but they were probably worn out even back then. They're pretty rare and tuning parts are basically non-existent to the best of my knowledge. I think you would be better off with a Weber/Solex/Mikuni or even an SU.

An SU? Don't those have leather in them or something? ;D

Thanks for the advice though, I'm just pondering my choices. Webers and Dell'ortos are popular with the VDub crowd, I'm probably better off going that route.

Turbo Corvairs did not have wastegates. Boost and hp were pretty much controlled (choked would be a better word) by the small venturi in the Carter YH. I think the 150hp YH had a 1.5" (~38mm) venturi and the 180hp YH had a 1-7/8" (~48mm) venturi.

Thanks for the additional info. Google searching and looking at the only Corvair forum I could find wasn't netting me a lot of info on these. I had been thinking that the 150 hp version might suit ... what year did that go to Steve?

The 150hp YH was 1962 through 1964. Note that the Corvair turbo sucked thru the carb so the Toyota blower needs to be capably of handling Fuel & Air without contaminating the oil with fuel.

I believe three YH's were used on the 235 cu in six in the '53 Corvette.

Yup, I know of at least a few Aussie guys who have run the Toyota blower on a VDub with a carb ahead of it, the rotor material is OK and the fluid is in a separate chamber.

Early Corvettes had them, as did some Nashes!!

                Thanks everyone for the input.
