Does anybody have a brand preference? Or something they think is junk? Or is synthetic oil not worth the cost. I was going to throw Amsoil in the tranny and diffs. Then go with 5W30 synthetic Valvoline in the engine.

Re: Synthetic Oils
I dont know if any of them are any better than the rest. My vette calls for Mobil 1 5w-30 as does one of the saleens. another saleen says 5w-20 and the shelby says 5w-50. I have been using the castrol synthetic for the mustangs and will use the mobil 1 for the vette. My guess is they are pretty much the same but lets hear from some of the professionals.Life is too short to drive boring cars! -
Re: Synthetic Oils
I run Royal Purple in my '99 Z28.
Check out this comparison test of a lot of major oils, it has both synthetic and regular.
Also notice the Load Rating, this is how many pounds of pressure they applied to the bearing. And if you notice most of the bearings tested have major damage with only 2-4 lbs of pressure, whereas if you scroll down to the Royal Purple they applied 8 lbs and there is barely any damage to the bearing.
Also look at the Pressure Resistance, most of oils are below 5000psi, whereas the Royal Purple is 131,000psi. And the only oil that was over 10,000psi was Valvoline Durablend, which was 23,000psi.
Anyway check it out for yourself.

Ditch the Mobil 1 and switch to Royal Purple, your cars will thank you for it. ;)Originally posted by bearphotoI dont know if any of them are any better than the rest. The proof is in the tests I just posted.Comment

Yep, asking carjunkies about what oil is best, is like asking chicks what color eye shadow is best (or some sh!t like that anyhow).Originally posted by 68 Valiant.. but I was just thinking I probably opened up a can of worms here.

Royal Purple isn't readily available around here ( I'm sure somebody would carry it but I don't know where)
I heard "rumours" it starts to break down fairly quick.Comment

whatever you do, MAKE SURE you trust the tests that are put out by the companies that sell the oil. I mean, how could you be any smarter than to do that? :

Re: Synthetic Oils
mobil 1 is just fine.. ryal pur. cost way to much..
I got 460000 miles out of a 302 in a delivery car(beat daily)
use'n it.. sold that car 5 years ago. and it's still running like a top.. with 615000 miles on the never rebuilt factory 302 ford..
dads 1998 chevy p/u has 786000 miles on it now..
third tranny.. but still 190 in all cyd. on a commpression test
leak down is at or under 12% in all 8 cyl.

Re: Synthetic Oils
Although the article Alex posted up clearly states this, it is worth repeating that the test performed ONLY tested "film strength" in order to work out the load bearing capability of the oils tested.
"We have to make clear that this experiment only tests one specific attribute of each oil, so while the oils we tested may have performed poorly under these test conditions, they may perform better in other tests."
I'm not saying that this test is not important, but it is not the only criteria for consideration in selecting an oil for your specific application.
Who can list all the engine oil attributes that are important to us ?
To bad the store didn't have Amsoil on the shelf, that would have been very interesting ...
