Im looking to get some snow tires for my mustang. I currently have 235/60 r15's on it and no one can get a snow tire for that size. I really dont want to buy new rims for this car just for the winter. Any ideas?

why not 235/70/15
the thinner the tire the more weight per square inch of contact pushing down on the tire..Comment

Re: Snow tires for the Stang
Ok i went to a couple tire stores to get a quote. At discount they are recomending 205-65-15 (apparently 225 was the stock tire size) Hankooks for $76 each. They guy told me that i should really do all 4 tires or it wont be worth it, so that brings me to 322 with tax.
Belle Tire (this guys wasnt the smartest cookie) wanted to sell me 2 kelly snow trackers for 195 out the door, but i think i could get a better tire for that money.
Ill check at work on thursday to see if our supplier has anything good to offer.Comment

Re: Snow tires for the Stang
go look at the tire rack , just to have an idea..
and print it out and bring it with you..
they see that in your hand and tires seem to get cheaper.. ;D
still you really don't was 60 or 65 sided tires for the snow..
stangs are light in the back to start with..
at least go to a 70 or you are wasting money even buy'n them..
wide tires can not cut through the snow. they only roll over it..
wide tires roll on sand thin tires sink..
in snow you want the sinkersComment

Re: Snow tires for the Stang
I'm assuming this is a Fox Mustang if you're talking about 225/60/15 for the OEM size. 205/65/15 is a good choice for winters, that's what came on the last of the 4-cyl. Foxes that had the 10-hole wheels in the early 90s. Narrower is better for the snow, and you want 4 ... no point to getting moving if you can't turn or stop. Lots of choices for winters in 205/65/15.

Where are you, Woodward? My son is a Discount manager in the Royal Oak/Clawson area (they keep moving him from store to store). If you want I'll set you up with his number but let me contact him first so he knows you're coming. Ben's a good guy and he'll treat you right.

Re: Snow tires for the Stang
Bill, I recommend you call tire rack and let the rep talk you through the options. The first winter I owned the goat (bought new in '05), I called them. They set me up with Dunlop Winter Sports, the same size as the current tire (245/45R17). The rep advised not going to a narrower tire because of the goat's performance suspension. The goat is my daily driver and she has never been stuck; the tires are now going on their 5th season. I also bought the tires mounted on rims (cheap Korean ASEs). My reasoning was that after 4 years the cost of mounting tires on & off each year was about the same as the rims. It addition, tire jockeys are not known to be the most concerned about scratching wheels they don't own. Tire Rack delivered the mounted tires/wheels via UPS and all I did was bolt them on. Which is now a ritual performed every year on the Friday after ThanksgivingOriginally posted by Woodward_DreamsIm looking to get some snow tires for my mustang. Re: Snow tires for the Stang
There is some wisdom in putting snows an all four - but I've gotten through a few winters with 2wd pickups with just snows in the rear.
I agree 100% on using tire rack as a knowledge base - even if you buy locally - it's tough to beat the personal feedback you can gain from reading the reviews there.
Do you have 4 or 5 lug wheels? -- seems the old phone dial wheels are a dime a dozen if you want to run those for snows. There's always something new to learn.Comment

Thanks for the advise guys. Looks like im going to just buy rears for now, and maybe fronts later depending on how the all seasons up front work.

Re: Snow tires for the Stang
Ok well i decided on getting all 4 done. this way ill have a good winter set and ill buy a new set for the summer (something more sticky). Its supposed to snow on thursday so Im going to get them installed tomorrow.
And since my birthday is coming up, my parents are buying 2 of them for me as my present this year
Im getting these from discount tire. Tire rack doesnt carry them, but the ratings everywhere else are really good.

Re: Snow tires for the Stang
Way better having 4, believe me. Hankook makes some good winter products, which is a bit surprising for a company based out of Korea. We expect that from the German and Scandanavian tire makers.
All of my drivers since 1990 I've put 4 winters on, I even make sure my work demo here gets them. Back in the early 90s I had an 85 Capri RS 5.0L for a daily, and used some of the old Michelin TRX winters on all 4 corners, worked awesome. The TRX summers were crap, but the winter boots kicked ass. It's very nice being able to brake and steer in the nasty weather. ;)

Re: Snow tires for the Stang
All 4 new shoes are installed and ready for snow. There's actually a part of me that wants it to snow now (but only a small part of me). I guess i should get a couple bags of sand too.Comment
