    LT1 Motor swap saga

As some of you might have seen the blog item, I blew the motor in my '95 Camaro. Missed third gear,,,,,and, "took 'er to the moon". I wasn't even racing anybody, just beating the snot out of it all by myself! Toys are ment to be broken.

I obtained another motor with I beleave has 80,000 on it, and here is the tear down........

$450 short block heads and intake

      Re: LT1 Motor swap saga

I only got half of my post up,,, so here is the rest from yesterday.

Walls all look good, maybe no over bore

This is typical bering wear through out the motor

      Huston we have a problem...

It figures the last rod, #8 had a spun berring

You can see the burnishing on the outside of the halves, from spinning in the rod.

It looks like it might clean up with a .010" cut. (That's .005" deep x 2 for dia.)

The only other problem found was this broken cap bolt. the last .625" is still in the hole.

Little more to do arround here, then off to the machine shop next week. Today I will clean up some flashing on the block with a grinder.

      Untill next time,
      Buddy

Great teardown pics Buddy, sorry for the issues, but that's life.
I'll bet that SOB so-and-so knew he had a spun bearing, too !!

Looking forward to the machining and rebuild pics.

Good Stuff Buddy.....keep it coming. At least you caught the spun bearing before it was in the car.

Are you going to do a tear down of the blown engine?
              Escaped on a technicality.

                  Re: LT1 Motor swap saga

Yes I will do a tear down on the blown motor, it's gunna be nasty in that one. I will probably need a rod out of it anyway. I had talked to the guy that had the motor first, he had told me it had a tap he thought was up top, I thought for $450 was still a fair deal.
I will try to document everything, not too bad for cell phone photography. ;D

Hm, busted main bolt - I wonder what would cause that?

Sorry to see you have a spun rod bearing to deal with - but hopefully the machine shop will treat you right.

Thanks for the write up - keep 'em comin!

I've actually seen 3 or 4 LT's with a busted main bolt. All were bone stock, not hot rodded and with the factory bolts. None showed major signs of detonation, just very minor cap walk. I just wonder if the metal in the main bolts has changed through the years. I never ran into that with an early SBC.

Really pretty good pics for a cell phone. Definitly want to see the tear down of the dead one.
