Viper V10 in a MustangBy Brian Lohnes Posted 12/02/08

Every once in a while even we get dope-slapped with something. This Mustang is one of those somethings.

Long story short, Scott Vanderschoor of NiteMare Motorsports in Des Moines, Iowa is more than halfway to having successfully mated a Dodge Viper V-10 and T-56 six-speed transmission into an SN95 Mustang.

Realizing that simply putting a stock Viper motor into a Mustang is not wacky enough, Vanderschoor told us that the motor will have a twin-turbo setup on it when completed. As is to be expected, major changes were made to the firewall to create enough room for the lengthy 10-cylinder powerplant. Eight and a half inches of the motor actually sit inside the car and the mill sits 3 inches lower than the stock Ford small-block that was formerly in the car.

All of this is to create a car that will be a multi-purpose, pump gas burning terror. Scott is going to bolt in an IRS from a 2004 Cobra (we winced too), but realizes that he’s living on borrowed time with that piece. A narrowed (and bombproofed) 8.8 third member will eventually find its way under the car.

The full story and lots of pics are here.

Finally, going to be back on the road. All the machine work got completed for the Cobra's motor and it's going back together. Nothing too radically different.

- Block was taken .020 over
- Wiseco forged pistons, Plasma-moly file fit rings.
- stock rods had the wrist pin holes machined to accept bushings to allow full  floating pins
- Comp Cams cam shaft
- Stock crank was polished

Me and my motor man, Tom will be getting it all thrown back together and the motor SHOULD be back in the car this week. As soon as it fires and idles it will be heading to Omaha for a break in tune. Car must be at Hot Rod Power Tour starting June 5th so that's the goal!

Car sounded awesome in the vids, belt be damned. Combined with all the intricate work I see everywhere, and the attention to detail is just stunning, I can't wait to see the beauty shots when it's done.

If I got pissed off every time this car tried to fight back I would have given up a long time ago man.

Like the saying goes.....if it was easy everybody would do it

I'm not sure you're handling this correctly.  I thought when your motor fried you were supposed to get a sleazy lawyer and sue somebody.

Just a little update since I never mentioned why we have yet to get the dyno vids up.

Shortly after the car was running and literally the day before dynoing the car the motor started making some bottom death noises. It had a nasty rattle to it that I could not pinpoint. Shortly there after the motor locked up at idle.

So I tore it down and found that the cam itself had a journal running dry for one reason or another and it chewed it's way into the block and ultimately locked it up. I had to do a complete tear down and get the motor repaired at the machine shop and it is now back under assembly with some additional goodies that should make it bullet proof up to 1,500-1,700 hp. It's a bad deal that it happened like it did especially so close to being done but that is the nature of the hobby. The important thing is that it was fixable and will now be even better. I'll keep you guys posted on when she's back on all four and DieselGeek and I get it running like a top.
