Viper V10 in a MustangBy Brian Lohnes Posted 12/02/08
Every once in a while even we get dope-slapped with something. This Mustang is one of those somethings.
Long story short, Scott Vanderschoor of NiteMare Motorsports in Des Moines, Iowa is more than halfway to having successfully mated a Dodge Viper V-10 and T-56 six-speed transmission into an SN95 Mustang.
Realizing that simply putting a stock Viper motor into a Mustang is not wacky enough, Vanderschoor told us that the motor will have a twin-turbo setup on it when completed. As is to be expected, major changes were made to the firewall to create enough room for the lengthy 10-cylinder powerplant. Eight and a half inches of the motor actually sit inside the car and the mill sits 3 inches lower than the stock Ford small-block that was formerly in the car.
All of this is to create a car that will be a multi-purpose, pump gas burning terror. Scott is going to bolt in an IRS from a 2004 Cobra (we winced too), but realizes that he’s living on borrowed time with that piece. A narrowed (and bombproofed) 8.8 third member will eventually find its way under the car.
The full story and lots of pics are here.

[quote author=Pumpkin]. Love your attitude about the whole thing though, and looking forward to updates. Bad Ass ride you've got there.

If I got pissed off every time this car tried to fight back I would have given up a long time ago man.
Like the saying goes.....if it was easy everybody would do it

I'm not sure you're handling this correctly. I thought when your motor fried you were supposed to get a sleazy lawyer and sue somebody.

Just a little update since I never mentioned why we have yet to get the dyno vids up.
Shortly after the car was running and literally the day before dynoing the car the motor started making some bottom death noises. It had a nasty rattle to it that I could not pinpoint. Shortly there after the motor locked up at idle.
So I tore it down and found that the cam itself had a journal running dry for one reason or another and it chewed it's way into the block and ultimately locked it up. I had to do a complete tear down and get the motor repaired at the machine shop and it is now back under assembly with some additional goodies that should make it bullet proof up to 1,500-1,700 hp. It's a bad deal that it happened like it did especially so close to being done but that is the nature of the hobby. The important thing is that it was fixable and will now be even better. I'll keep you guys posted on when she's back on all four and DieselGeek and I get it running like a top.

Don't listen to the people about the seats.....They are comfortable.
That is some great fiberglass work. Looks great. I can't wait to see it run.

Thanks for the kind words guys.....I haven't been able to produce the dyno vids yet as we ran into some problems with the AEM acting up so it had to get sent out for repairs. I should have it in a day or two though. Been doing some busy work in the meantime. But it's all stuff that needed to be done and the car will be more or less complete by the time it shows up later this week.
So I went ahead and started getting the interior done and I am happy with how it's turning out. I went with all Auto Meter Ultra Lite gauges since none of the stockers would work obviously. I had in my mind for a long time how I wanted the center console gauges to look which are my Boost, Water, and Oil gauges. I always liked how the Gen I and II Vipers had the gauges across the dash inline. So I kind of did the same thing with mine where the vents once were. I am only running heat now through the defrost vent anyway till I figure out something for AC.
Anyway the first pic is how the stock center console looks and you can see that I cut out the vents and then out of fiberglass made the new pods....I've literally never done interior fiberglass work in my life so I think it turned out alright. Just gotta fab up the rest of it that ties it into the floor that hit it with some paint and throw my Alpine deck back in it. Still trying to figure out where I want to mount the AEM Tru Boost which is why it's jut hanging out in there. Also got the new gauge panel made for the Speedo, Tach, Fuel level, and Voltage. The Momo wheel got thrown in also. A buddy of mine is taking the center cap out of the wheel and painting cross hairs on it like my avatar has and I also painted the recessed area of the wheel that says "Momo" in red cause the yellow just wasn't working.
The rest of the pics are pretty self explanatory. I would say the biggest "complaint" people have about the build are the seats I am running. People think they are too racey for a street car but anybody that knows me can attest to the way I drive my cars....which is HARD. This is primarily a street car but it will do plenty of racing. In particular I am going to do some standing mile stuff with this car and the rules are pretty strict so I wanted the car to be able to everything I wanted it to do all in one configuration. Besides the Kirkey's are super comfortable. Still have some carpet work to do but more or less this is how it will look.
That's all for now....the AEM should be here in a couple days and the car should be ready for tuning.

I have been following your build for some time and must say I am very impressed with the vision and quality of work.
Even though tunning vids are undoubtably next, I can't wait to see some real live on-the-road action !!
;D

Car sounded awesome in the vids, belt be damned. Combined with all the intricate work I see everywhere, and the attention to detail is just stunning, I can't wait to see the beauty shots when it's done.
