Lohnes' Pic of the Week: 1964 GTO WheelstandBy Brian Lohnes Posted 04/15/09

I have a soft spot for 1964 Pontiac GTOs. My dad restored one when I was a little guy and drove the wheels off it while I was growing up, and now it sits in his garage while the Nova bracket car gets most of the attention. I've got lots of great memories of being pressed back in the seat when dad dropped the hammer on the 389.

Anyway, this series of photos was taken at Atco Dragway back in the 2003/2004 timeframe at a nostalgia race the track was hosting. There was a Nostalgia Super Stock class and this car was driven by a guy named Charlie Baesch.

This car is wickedly awesome. It’s powered by a 421ci Poncho motor that just sounds like nothing you’ve ever heard and it’s hooked to a stick box. The car was leaving very hard all day and when it came to the line on this particular pass I was able to get to the center of the track to claim my spot.

The cool thing about the photo of the car nearly vertical is that I was the only one who got it out of a bunch of people snapping photos (including legend Dave Milcarek). The other guys put their cameras down about the time I got the second snap. The I followed the car and got the third as it tried to launch into low Earth orbit. This was before digital cameras were the order of the day (at least for broke guys like me), so I had to wait to get home and develop the film to see what I had.

Needless to say, I was stoked at the results.

Here you go, instead of having to save and upload the photo again, just use width and height in the img tags. This is what I did for yours, just take out the '&', I had to put those in so that is showed the text instead of the picture. You just need to make sure you keep the height and width in proportion, for yours I used half of each of the original picture.

p.s.- That is one bad ass Poncho. Makes me think 'Screamin Indian' instead of Goat.

I have to admit , I was looking for a 65 , when I found my 64. My dad had a nocturn blue 65  so I really wanted a 65. when I found my 64 I told him and he said" he really wanted a 64 , but there was none left at the local dealers so he bought a 65".  I figured  it  was meant to be.

He traded a 61 fury rag top, that had a bored 413, jahns pistons ,crane cam(rip),and a cross ram. he says it ran low 13s. not sure I believe it.

i need to start posting my GTO picture collection ;D

How big do you want it?

I too am not a big GM fan, but that year of GTO is one that I would like in my drive way.  When they came out I begged my dad to buy one.  He talked big, but a Falcon came home with  him.    I know he would have loved it as he drove the devil out of our '61 Catalina with a three speed straight drive on the column.

Even as a Ford guy - I'd love to have a GTO of that vintage.

Do they share any parts with Seth's Malibu?  - just curious - the greenhouse looks similar.

There's just something RIGHT about that whole era of "boxy" coupes and sedans.  I was surely born in the wrong era... sorry - but I just don't get as excited about the new G8!
