Basic Tech: Rebuilding A Rochester B CarburetorBy Brian Lohnes Posted 01/04/10

Goliath, our lumbering 1966 Chevy C50 project truck, is equipped with a 292ci straight six engine. That workaday mill is not exactly what you'd call a performance piece in stock condition. That being said, it still cranks out nearly 300 ft/lbs and it moves the big truck along pretty well. Ever since we got the truck we knew that the carb had issues. It stumbled badly, generally ran bad, had no fast idle when the choke was applied, and frequently "sneezed" through the carb when cold. It was time for a rebuild of the not-so-mighty Rochester B 1-barrel carb. It's no Dominator, but this little piece is a pretty cool fuel mixer.

From what we have read, this carb moves about 250-275 cfm, plenty to feed the stock 292. In the future we'd like to go all retro-cool and add another 1bbl on a neat manifold, but for the time being, this single carb will get the job done.

We've got a gallery of about fifty photos documenting every step of rebuilding this simple carb. In all honesty, after completing this first one, we think we could do the next one in less than 15 minutes on the clock, but since rebuilding carbs is kind of a relaxing zen type of deal we'll take our time.

We're going to take you step by step through the whole carb in the detail that only the internet allows. No editor in his right mind would try to shove a fifty photo package rebuilding a one barrel carb into a magazine.

I have a box of the large base 1bbl carbs I think there is 4 in the box {mine are small base as it is a 216} and I have a couple 292 cam's  that are good for regrind  you are more then welcome to them!  maybe when you go to maxton stop in buffalo and pick them up  or come down for the big gasser meet  . 8)

Brain,

Why not stick 2 - 1bbl TBI's on it ... run MS. Come over to inliners.org there is a "lot" of interest in hotrodding the 292.... i

Down the road when I finally pull the engine to rebuild it (most likely next winter) I'd LOVE to do the twin 1bbl TBIs on it. That would be super bitchin'.

Dan's carbs will be MonJets, not B carbs like on the truck.

Today's adventure with the suburban is making me really like old non-electronic stuff. that you can fix on the side of the road.

So where did you get the third hand for the check ball picture? :)

Randel, that was the guy that "actually" rebuilt the carb, Cough(caveman)Cough.

Just twistin' your nips Bruab, job well done. A tasty Carb rebuild that runs better then when you started, is more fullfilling than sex with a partner ;D

That wheezzy 6 holer is good for now but, a truck called "Goliath" needs something thats compression fired under thew hood!

Yup, only here can you find excitement over a 1bbl :P ;D

I'm not sure on the availablity of the floats, but I would of replaced it anyways.  Unless of course you know you aren't going to be using that carb long.

The picture gallery format works very well scrolling through the pic's.

So where did you get the third hand for the check ball picture? :)

All or nothin' Bri!  Gotta clean out the shop.  Besides, you may need parts from each to make 2 good ones.  I know one is the emissions carb from the '78 engine but I'm not sure what the difference is.  Want me to send 'em or will you pick them up in the Spring?  To have them mailed PM me your address.
